What your exported power is really worth.

Feed-in tariffs have fallen a long way. This shows what yours earns, and what you give up every time a kilowatt hour leaves your roof instead of running something in your house.

  • The export gap, quantified
  • Your own rates
  • Shows what to shift

Your numbers

  • Victoria (VIC)3.6 hrs
  • New South Wales (NSW)4.2 hrs
  • Queensland (QLD)4.8 hrs
  • South Australia (SA)4.6 hrs
  • Western Australia (WA)5.2 hrs
  • Tasmania (TAS)3.3 hrs
  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT)4.4 hrs
  • Northern Territory (NT)5.8 hrs

Sets the peak sun hours used in the generation estimate, based on the state capital.

kW

If you are not sure yet, try the system size calculator first.

Working from home, a pool pump or ducted cooling pushes this up. Out all day pushes it down.

c/kWh

On your bill, usually called the usage or consumption rate.

c/kWh

On your bill, the rate you are credited for power you export.

  • What you pay for power
  • Your feed-in tariff

These come off your electricity bill. We ask for them rather than guessing, which is the entire point of this tool, and the reason the answer will be about your house rather than an average one.

What this assumes, in full.

Every calculator makes assumptions. Most sites hide theirs, because naming them makes the headline number look less impressive.

  1. 01Generation uses your state capital's approximate peak sun hours and a performance ratio of 0.80.
  2. 02It uses a single flat usage rate. If you are on time-of-use pricing, the gap between using and exporting varies through the day and is usually wider at peak.
  3. 03Some retailers pay a tiered feed-in tariff that drops after a daily threshold. If yours does, this will be optimistic.
  4. 04It does not model a battery. Storage is the other way to close the same gap.

Because so much solar now exports in the middle of the day that wholesale prices in those hours have collapsed, and in some periods go negative. Feed-in tariffs follow that. It is the main reason self-consumption and storage now matter more than system size.

No. Export credit is still money, and the alternative is throwing the generation away. The point is that using or storing that power is worth considerably more, so it is worth shifting what you reasonably can.

Hot water, by a distance, because a heat pump can be scheduled to run in the middle of the day. After that, pool pumps, dishwashers, washing machines and charging an electric car.
