Calculator

Check the payback on a quote you have already been given.

We will not invent a price to make this look good. Put in the figure from any quote, ours or someone else's, and this tells you what it actually pays back at your tariffs.

  • Works on any quote
  • Your tariffs, your numbers
  • Compare quotes fairly

Your numbers

$

The figure you would actually pay, after any rebate has been deducted.

  • Victoria (VIC)3.6 hrs
  • New South Wales (NSW)4.2 hrs
  • Queensland (QLD)4.8 hrs
  • South Australia (SA)4.6 hrs
  • Western Australia (WA)5.2 hrs
  • Tasmania (TAS)3.3 hrs
  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT)4.4 hrs
  • Northern Territory (NT)5.8 hrs

Sets the peak sun hours used in the generation estimate, based on the state capital.

kW

If you are not sure yet, try the system size calculator first.

c/kWh

On your bill, usually called the usage or consumption rate.

c/kWh

On your bill, the rate you are credited for power you export.

Working from home, a pool pump or ducted cooling pushes this up. Out all day pushes it down.

Fill in the price on your quote and what you pay for power and your feed-in tariff and your answer appears here.

Nothing here is sent to us. The maths runs in your browser, and there is no email gate.

Still needed

  • The price on your quote
  • What you pay for power
  • Your feed-in tariff

These come off your electricity bill. We ask for them rather than guessing, which is the entire point of this tool, and the reason the answer will be about your house rather than an average one.

What this assumes, in full.

Every calculator makes assumptions. Most sites hide theirs, because naming them makes the headline number look less impressive.

  1. 01Simple payback, with no discounting of future cash flows and no allowance for tariff changes.
  2. 02Generation uses your state capital's approximate peak sun hours and a performance ratio of 0.80.
  3. 03Panel degradation is not modelled. Most manufacturers warrant around 0.5 percent loss a year, so later years produce slightly less.
  4. 04It assumes the price you entered is the price after any rebate. If your quote shows the rebate separately, subtract it first.
  5. 05Inverter replacement toward the end of the period is not included.

If the numbers here do not match what a salesperson told you, ask them which assumption they used.

Because a price that ignores your roof, your switchboard, your access and your rebate eligibility is not a quote, it is bait. We will give you a real figure in writing once we know those things.

Yes, and we would encourage it. If a quote looks poor against your own tariffs, that is worth knowing before you sign, whoever wrote it.

It varies with your usage pattern and tariffs, which is exactly why we would rather you calculated yours than read an average off a website. What we will say is that a very long payback usually means the system is not matched to the household.
