Calculator

What solar would actually be worth on your bill.

Most savings calculators pick their own electricity price and hand you a big number. This one uses the rates printed on your bill, so the answer is about your household rather than an average one.

  • Uses your own tariff
  • No price assumptions
  • Shows the working

Your numbers

  • Victoria (VIC)3.6 hrs
  • New South Wales (NSW)4.2 hrs
  • Queensland (QLD)4.8 hrs
  • South Australia (SA)4.6 hrs
  • Western Australia (WA)5.2 hrs
  • Tasmania (TAS)3.3 hrs
  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT)4.4 hrs
  • Northern Territory (NT)5.8 hrs

Sets the peak sun hours used in the generation estimate, based on the state capital.

kW

If you are not sure yet, try the system size calculator first.

c/kWh

On your bill, usually called the usage or consumption rate.

c/kWh

On your bill, the rate you are credited for power you export.

Working from home, a pool pump or ducted cooling pushes this up. Out all day pushes it down.

Fill in what you pay for power and your feed-in tariff and your answer appears here.

Nothing here is sent to us. The maths runs in your browser, and there is no email gate.

Still needed

  • What you pay for power
  • Your feed-in tariff

These come off your electricity bill. We ask for them rather than guessing, which is the entire point of this tool, and the reason the answer will be about your house rather than an average one.

What this assumes, in full.

Every calculator makes assumptions. Most sites hide theirs, because naming them makes the headline number look less impressive.

  1. 01Generation uses your state capital's approximate long-run peak sun hours and a performance ratio of 0.80, the conventional allowance for inverter losses, cabling, temperature, soiling and orientation.
  2. 02It assumes an unshaded, reasonably north-facing roof. Shading or a poor orientation reduces the figure, sometimes substantially.
  3. 03It is a year-one estimate. Panels degrade slowly and tariffs change, so later years will differ.
  4. 04It does not include the daily supply charge, which you pay whether or not you have solar.

If the numbers here do not match what a salesperson told you, ask them which assumption they used.

Because that needs a price, and we do not publish one. If you already have a quote, put its figure into the payback calculator and it will do the rest.

Both are on your electricity bill, usually on the page that breaks down the charges. The usage rate is in cents per kWh, and the feed-in tariff is the credit you get for exported power.

It is arithmetic on real inputs, which makes it far more honest than a calculator that guesses your tariff. It is still an estimate: your roof's pitch, orientation and shading are not in it. We model those properly when we quote.
