Pool heating

Most Melbourne pools get used for about ten weeks a year.

Heating changes that. The question is only which method suits your pool, your roof and how far into the shoulder seasons you actually want to swim.

  • Season extension

What it costs

Your roof, your switchboard, your access and the size you actually need all move the number, so we price it properly rather than publish a figure we would have to revise. You get a fixed, itemised quote with every incentive already deducted.

What may apply to this

No rebate program applies to this on its own. We will tell you plainly if something you are also considering does attract one.

No amounts, on purpose: they change, sometimes mid-year. We confirm your actual entitlement in writing and show it as a deducted line on your quote.

Solar pool heating or a heat pump?

Solar pool heating circulates your pool water through collectors on the roof, where the sun warms it directly. It costs very little to run because the only energy used is the pump, but it works when the sun is out and needs enough suitable roof area to do its job.

A pool heat pump works like a reverse-cycle air conditioner for your pool, drawing warmth from the air. It costs more to run than solar but it holds a set temperature regardless of the weather and extends the season considerably further at both ends. For many pools the right answer is both.

Heat pump or solar

Two methods

Solar, heat pump, or both.

They solve the same problem differently. Solar is nearly free to run but follows the weather. A heat pump costs more to run but holds the temperature you asked for.

Solar pool heating

Pool water is pumped through collectors on your roof and returned warmed by the sun.

Running cost
Very low, the pump only
Temperature control
Follows the weather
Works on cloudy days
Limited
Needs roof area
Yes, a decent amount
Season extension
Extends summer

Pool heat pump

Draws warmth from the air and transfers it into the water, like a reverse-cycle unit for your pool.

Running cost
Low, far below gas
Temperature control
Holds a set temperature
Works on cloudy days
Yes
Needs roof area
No
Season extension
Well into the shoulders

Most pools do best with both

Solar carries the load whenever the sun is out, and the heat pump tops up on cool or overcast days. You get heat-pump reliability at close to solar running costs.

Before either, get a blanket

The bulk of a pool's heat loss is evaporation from the surface. A cover is the cheapest heat retention you can buy and it cuts the load on whatever system you install. We will say so even though it is the smallest thing we sell.

What you get

Included as standard.

01

Season extension

Comfortable swimming well beyond the short window an unheated Melbourne pool gives you.

02

Low running cost

Solar heating uses little more than the pump. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so it runs far cheaper than gas.

03

Runs on your solar

With panels on the roof, a pool heat pump can run largely on your own daytime generation.

04

Sized to your pool

Volume, surface area, shelter and your target temperature all change the specification. We measure rather than estimate.

05

Covers and controls

A blanket is the cheapest heat retention there is. We will tell you if it should come before any heating at all.

06

Complete installation

Plumbing, electrical, controller and commissioning, set up and demonstrated before we leave.

Solar is cheapest to run and ideal if you have suitable roof area and mainly want to extend summer. A heat pump costs more to run but holds a set temperature whatever the weather and stretches the season much further. Many pools end up with both, using solar as the primary and the heat pump to top up.

It depends on the method, your target temperature and how sheltered the pool is, so we will not promise a number blind. Heating extends the season meaningfully at both ends, and a pool blanket materially improves whatever system you choose.

Solar pool heating is close to free beyond the circulation pump. A heat pump uses considerably less energy than gas for the same heat. We will estimate running cost against your pool size and tariff as part of the quote.

It is the single most effective thing you can do. Most heat loss is evaporation from the surface, so a blanket keeps warmth in overnight and cuts the load on whatever heating you install. We recommend one regardless of the system.

A pool heat pump can, yes, and it is a good match because it runs during the day when your system is generating. Solar pool heating is a separate roof-mounted system and does not use your electrical solar at all beyond the pump.
